Ummm...let's see, I guess all those non-zombie dead people
The Self Destruct System PA Lady

-Claire Redfield has become quite the young revolutionary. Instead of using her spring break from college to go to Fort Lauderdale, she instead decides to wage a war against Umbrella Inc. She's also trying to find her brother, Chris, who's apparently missing, but is most likely avoiding her...or not. He actually appears later in the game and becomes the main character. Claire is jailed and sent to an Umbrella Controlled Evil Island of Doom (There are a few of these) and after teaming up with inmate Steve Burnside, who is also playable for a short time, takes a plane to an arctic base, or an antarctic base or one of those. The game then switches to Chris, who arrives at the island as soon as Claire leaves, but then follows her to said cold base.

-Although it isn't numbered, I consider Code Veronica to be a core RE game. In fact, it should have been RE4 because of all of the previous RE characters in it, but it does deviate a little from the actual story (Umbrella is still up and running at the end of RECV, but is bankrupt at the beginning of RE4). The new characters are great. Steve and Alfred, love them or hate them, are very memorable and the cut-scenes are as well.

-That said, I find it to be the worst RE game. I think all RE games are good, but this one the least. It's not even one big thing that I don't like about it, just many small things. The controls took a bit of a backwards step in time, they went over board with the fogging effects, it's too easy to miss items, there are too many enemies and not enough ammo in the beginning, ink ribbons (used for saving the game) are too rare, the same damn foot step sound effect is used throughout the entire game and there are too many places where you can die instantly towards the end. I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but you get the point.

-Overall, great story, bad everything else.

-My favorite events of the game: The only reason I replay it is for the cut-scenes, which are thankfully plentiful. Alfred Ashford's laugh, too funny for words.

The Self Destruct System PA Lady

-You are one of two members, Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield, in the Alpha team of S.T.A.R.S., a police special response organization, and you're sent to investigate some mysterious murders in a forest/mountain region on the outskirts of Raccoon City. Here's a hint, the murders involve zombies. Betcha didn't see that one coming. The entire game takes place in a mansion estate filled with monsters. First the mansion, then a courtyard near the mansion, then a guardhouse, then back through the courtyard and mansion again, then some mines under the mansion, and finally a laboratory under the mines. Big estate.

-I find the original RE to be interesting, mainly because I spend more time laughing at the acting than concentrating on the game. Yes, the original RE is notorious for the bad acting, for the voiceovers and cut-scenes, but I consider it to be a characteristic of the game rather than a downside; in fact I rather like the cheesy acting and it makes me wish more games used footage of real people instead of CG cut-scenes all of the time. Who agrees? *Tumbleweed rolls by* Yeah, me neither. Anyway, the images that had the censors in an uproar 10 years ago are quaint by today's standards. I found that the graphics were great considering that this is the pre-Final Fantasy VII era.The music was and is still fantastic.

-Overall, it's a good game and I can definitely see why it spawned a million sequels and spin-offs.

-My favorite events of the game: The opening cut-scene, it's like watching a five minute horror movie parody. Any time Barry talks.

-"Resident Evil" ("Biohazard" in Japan) is one of the longest running series of videogames to date. Although it wasn't the first survival horror game, it pretty much invented the genre and it is the game that you probably think of when someone says survival horror.

-I find Resident Evil to be like a popular, cult classic. Popular because every gamer knows about it even if they've never played it. "Cult" because it's really a game that you either love or hate, and the one's that love it are very dedicated to it.

-Now I love RE, just in case that wasn't made apparent by the fact that I've made a gigantic Soldat mod from it, but there are many understandable things that cause people not to like the games. Tricky controls, random and often insane puzzle solving, downright difficulty, all these can lump up with some gamers and cause quite a loathing.

-I didn't even like the series at first, but there is just something that feels right about the games, I can't describe it well. After you've mastered the control system and get used to running into odd puzzles, it can be very entertaining. Whether I'm playing a 'No Merchant' run of RE4, or simply a nostalgic run of the original Resident Evil, I'm having fun.

-I'm not going to talk about dates, history or statistics here, you can check nearly any RE site for those. For a (fairly) quick synopsis of the full series, check out Wikipedia's RE section:

-What I want to do instead is talk a little about each core game, those being RE1, RE2, RE3, RECV, REmake, RE0 and RE4. These are all of the Resident Evils that inspired me to make RE Soldat and I consider them to be the best.

-There aren't any spoilers here, so feel free to read this even if you haven't played every game. I've listed all of the main characters too. I'll define a main character as a character who:

-Has more than 5 lines of dialogue.

OR
-Shows up at least 5 times in the game

OR
-Is playable at a certain point.

-And so the fans of sub characters won't come knocking at my door with torches, I'll also list every non-monster sub character in the order of importance.

-Note: I've actually replayed all of these games recently (in honor of the 10th anniversary, because I'm a sap), so I have a pretty good recollection of them all right now.

Resident Evil 2 - 1997-98

William Birkin

-Sub Characters:

Ben Bertolucci
Robert Kendo
Marvin Branagh

The Self Destruct System PA Lady

-Raccoon City is under assault by an "unknown" force, an unknown force of zombies, and you'll assume the role of a rookie cop, Leon, or the younger sister of Chris Redfield, Claire, to find a way out alive. Obviously "alive" because the game over screen prevents you from taking control of a dead, zombified character to complete the game, though that would be an interesting premise for a RE. It starts out in the streets of the city, then most of the game is played inside of the RPD's (Raccoon City Police Department) police station, then later some sewers, then a lab.

-I kind of find RE2 overrated. Sure it made a good sequel to the first RE, but now, being compared to later REs, it's a little bland. However it's the best RE in terms of zombie blastage. Take up your trusty shotgun and blow the limbs off anything in your path. Both the rendered and pre-rendered graphics surpass the original RE as well as the voice acting (though that's not saying much).

-The neat thing about this game is the alternate scenarios. The first game did have multiple stories, Jill and Barry, Chris and Rebecca, but the gameplay itself didn't change. In RE2 there is more deviation, taking control of Sherry and Ada, fighting different bosses and such. Plus the scenarios are reversible. If you play as Claire first then Leon, the game will be different than if you play as Leon first.

-Overall, a decent sequel, but it still feels boring to me.

-My favorite events of the game: Everything before entering the RPD building, fighting in the streets. Which brings me to the next RE...
Resident Evil 3: NEMESIS - 1999
-Main Characters:
Jill Valentine
Carlos Oliveria
Nicholai Ginovaef
The Nemesis (I consider him a character, he talks)
Barry Burton (In one of the endings)

-Sub Characters:
Brad Vickers
Mikhail Victor
Tyrell Patrick
Dario Rosso
That guy turning into a zombie
The pilot in the helicopter that gets shot down by the Nemesis
That doctor that recorded his voice in the hospital
The random civilians/police officers/soldiers who get killed
The male newscaster giving the somber speech at the end

-Raccoon City is still under assault by the "unknown" zombie force, but never fear, because you'll be playing as the Master of Unlocking herself, Jill Valentine, once again, and she has a fairly good "surviving zombie related incidents" track record. But this time you'll also have to evade a Tyrant that is on your heels at every programmed, semi-random, easily memorable turn. There's also a mercenary named Carlos Oliveria that you will control at some point, but it's mostly Jill's story. The first half of the game involves getting gritty in the streets, alleys and, uh, streets of Raccoon City, then in a clock tower, then a hospital, then a park, then finally a weird Umbrella factory/plant that manages monster waste, let's just call it a lab.

-This happens to be my favorite Resident Evil. It's really not all that different from the others, but it does have a more "on the move" type feeling that other games where you're escaping a city full of monsters should have. Graphically, it's nearly identical to RE2, but the voices have gotten noticeably better.

-I do, however, feel that the Nemesis could have been scarier. Not scarier looking, but scarier in terms of encountering him. Capcom set up this whole thing of the Nemesis being an ungodly creature that you'll never escape from, but he's really not all that difficult to run from or even fight. Maybe it's just me, but if they had toughened him up a bit and made him show up at truly random locations, he would have been a much better monster. A shame really, because he's the coolest.

-Overall, the Nemesis rant aside, an excellent game. In fact, I'll go play it right now...after I finish typing this section.

-My favorite events of the game: Everything! Except fighting the Grave Digger, that guy's a bastard, but everything else is gold.

Resident Evil Remake - 2002
-Main Characters:
Same as the original ones

-Sub Characters:
Same as the original ones,
except Edward's hand gets
replaced by Kevin Dooley's
corpse

-Ah, Resident Evil as the creators wanted it to be. If you liked the first Resident Evil, it will be difficult not to like this game, seeing how it is nearly an exact and visually better version of it. Needless to say, the voice actors are much better, along with all of the other sound effects.

-There is not that much to say that I haven't said about the original, but there are lots of surprises in store for RE veterans. New puzzles, areas and monsters. Defense items are great (I was sad to see them go). The only gripes I have is that I miss the crappy acting a little and Barry's beard, but that's really more of a personal preference.

-Overall, a good remake of a good game...but only for Gamecube.

-My favorite events of the game: The introduction to Lisa Trevor, a definite creep out, especially on the first play through because you don't expect it. All of the cut-scenes are also fantastic.
Resident Evil 0 - 2002-03
-Main Characters:
Rebecca Chambers
Billy Coen
James Marcus
Wesker and Birkin (Cameos)

-Sub Characters:
Enrico Marini
Edward Dewey
Kevin Dooley
Kenneth J. Sullivan
Richard Aiken
Forest Speyer
The dead MPs
The doomed people on the train
The doomed Umbrella soldiers on the train
  "      "          Marines in Billy's flashback
  "      "          civilians in Billy's flashback
The not so doomed soldiers with Wesker and Birkin that other flashback
Any other people unimportant enough for me to not remember
The out of place, scary sounding male voiceover in the beginning

-The Bravo team of S.T.A.R.S. is investigating the murders in the forest region, the ones involving zombies, and comes across a crashed truck with dead MPs and a prisoner transfer document of Billy Coen. You, as Rebecca Chambers, search a train car, finding Billy, but soon find out that there are zombies afoot! So Rebecca, the mild mannered rookie cop medic, and Billy, the killer Marine sentenced to death, team up against the common enemy, zombies. It's the original Odd Couple. The duration of RE0 takes place in an Umbrella training facility, but you explore a train before that, then a familiar looking lab once you leave.

-After the RE remake, RE0 wasn't groundbreaking, but it's still a fun RE prequel. The graphics are top notch even by 2006 standards, voices and music are superb, gameplay is...standard Resident Evil, but I like the fact that you can drop items anywhere, which was always an issue in the other games. I also like the partner zapping system.

-You can switch freely between Billy and Rebecca at nearly any time in the game and they will also travel together most of the time. This allows for easier victories against monsters and the ability to lug around a lot of stuff. The downside is that you also must manage two people at once. They both need healing items, weapons and ammo, which can take up a lot of space. And there are puzzles that require you to split the characters up and it's difficult to know who's going to need the bigger gun. A downside from a gameplay perspective is that RE0 is probably the least scariest RE because of the fact that the characters are rarely alone and it's pretty easy to beat the game with two people. In fact, I can't even recall what the game over screen looks like.

-Overall, a good Resident Evil with a mind numbing minigame.

-My favorite events of the game: Fighting the monkeys. Not because I like fighting monkeys, but because it makes me wonder how long it will take for Capcom to run out of ideas for monsters.
Resident Evil 4 - 2005
-Main Characters:
Leon S. Kennedy
Ashley Graham
Luis Sera
Ada Wong
Jack Krauser
Osmund Saddler
Wesker (Only mentioned, but is in 2 minigames)

-Sub Characters:
(For the sake of my sanity, let's pretend that the ganados
are not characters)
Ingrid Hunnigan
Ramon Salazar
Bitores Mendez
Spanish Cop #1
Spanish Cop #2
Mike the helicopter pilot (Not a good profession in Resident Evil)
The Spanish singer on the radio in the beginning
Agent Hunk from the minigame
The woman impaled through the face with a pitchfork
That bug that crawls across the beam while Leon and Luis are tied together
The pile of dead monks that fell into Salazar's spike pit

-Time to kick ass and take Spanish sounding names as you resume the role of Leon Scott Kennedy to...erm, what are we doing here, fighting Umbrella? No? Escaping a zombie infested city? Still no? What!? Saving the president's daughter! What the? Um, alright. Anyway, the game starts by doing just that. No evil corporations, no zombies, just a human fetch quest. However, you'll soon realize that this will require a lot more than you thought.

-I, like most RE fans, thought the boys over at Capcom had finally lost it and started feasting on each other's brains like the zombies they didn't include in RE4 for not including zombies in RE4. Good graphics or not, I expected sales to hit the floor with no zombies. But after playing the game, I found out how very wrong I was.

-Do you smell that? It's the smell of the fresh air that Resident Evil 4 has brought to the series. I didn't know it needed any fresh air, as the stale zombie air was doing just fine, but RE4 is undoubtedly one of the best Resident Evils. It's funny, the controls are nearly the same, but it doesn't feel as awkward as the old control system. The graphics, while not as detailed as pre-rendered backgrounds, are some of the most detailed real time images I've ever seen in a game. Every sound and song, above and beyond great. Every voice actor sounds realistic, even the Spanish ones that I can't understand a word of.

-I've thought about it and the only gripes I have about RE4 are the "interactive" cut-scenes. They are points in the game, most often in cut-scenes, that an icon that reads "AB" or "R+L" (for the Gamecube edition) or something else appears at the bottom of the screen. What this means is that you only have a few seconds, or a second, to push and/or mash the buttons, sometimes repeatedly, before something bad happens that typically results in a game over screen and a disgruntled player. I hate these. Some of the ones during gameplay are okay, but the ones that happen during cut-scenes are the worst. You have no choice but to keep doing it until you don't die and they usually end up ruining an otherwise cool movie. I like to sit back and enjoy cut-scenes, not sit poised at the edge of my seat, staring at the bottom of the screen, waiting for an icon to pop up.

-Overall, interactive cut-scene rant aside, a fantastic game. It may start off simply, but RE4 soon "Umbrellas" into quite an adventure.

-My favorite events of the game: I love the ability to "Kick" your enemies. Different characters can perform different close combat moves, I rather like Leon's "Suplex" move. I also like the Del Lagos boss fight, very creative.
